Swindon Gilbert and Sullivan will start rehearsing Iolanthe for our show in the Arts Centre in the week of 16-22 April next year.
We're performing HMS Pinafore, in a modern day setting, at the Swindon Arts Centre 5th-9th April 2022.
Rehearsals are every Tuesday, 1930hrs at Wroughton Workingmens Club. We'll be holding auditions on 31st Oct. If you want to sing in the chorus or audition for a part please join us on Tuesday. We're a very welcoming and friendly crew! Following an enforced hiatus thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic we are very pleased to announce that the Swindon Gilbert & Sullivan Society is back in action! We hope to produce a full show next spring - but we would be very pleased if you would join us for a warm up concert in October. All the details you need are below. We look forward to entertaining you again!
It is with much regret, though given the circumstances, no little surprise that we have to announce the cancellation of our 2020 performances of Princess Ida. Given the uncertainty of the impact and extent of Coronavirus/COVID-19 it is not possible to perform this show this year. We hope to perform Princess Ida at The Arts Centre in April 2021.
Currently the Wyvern Theatre and Old Town Arts Centre have decided to suspend or postpone performances as a public safety measure and we agree that given the seriousness of the current health crisis, the Swindon Gilbert & Sullivan Society should act like wise. It would be irresponsible to do anything else. We send our best wishes to staff at the Wyvern and Arts Centre as they face a difficult and uncertain time. TICKETS: 1: If you have bought your ticket from the Wyvern Theatre/Old Town Arts Centre: The Wyvern and Arts Centre are discouraging direct contact or telephoning the box office as they will be overwhelmed with calls. They ask that patrons follow social media for more details regarding refunds etc. Wyvern Theatre Twitter https://twitter.com/WyvernTheatre Wyvern Theatre Facebook https://www.facebook.com/WyvernTheatre/ Swindon Old Town Arts Centre Facebook https://en-gb.facebook.com/SwindonArtsCentre/ Swindon Old Town Arts Centre Twitter https://twitter.com/SwindonArtsCent 2. If you have bought a ticket from the Swindon Gilbert and Sullivan Society. We are currently working to identify how we can either offer a straight refund or a voucher for next year’s show. We will make a further announcement about this in due course. We wish all our members and audiences the very best during this time. Look out for one another, look after one another, and follow the NHS advice here: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/ We're pleased to announce our cast for Princess Ida. We're also pleased to welcome back Bob Hills as our stage director and Richard Abrams as our music director.
New season, new show indeed! For our 2020 show we will be performing PRINCESS IDA.
Last performed by this society in 1998, Princess Ida is Gilbert & Sullivan's eighth collaboration and concerns a princess who founds a women's university and teaches that women are superior to men and should rule in their stead. We can’t argue with that. Unfortunately there are many (mostly men) who think they can, including the Princess Ida's betrothed and her family, a situation which sets up many dramatic and comical situations including cross-dressing and pitched battles, or cross-dressing pitched battles – we’re happy with either situation. Written entirely in blank verse and unusually in three acts, Princess Ida contains some of Sullivan's most sublime music. We hope that you will enjoy seeing it as much as we will enjoy performing it. We also welcome back to Swindon G&S Bob Hills as director (working alongside our long-suffering but well loved MD Richard Abrams) for Ida. Bob last directed the company's production of Patience in 2011 at STEAM, and we - as ever - look forward to his innovative ideas about this show. We welcome Bob back and, if you'd like to be involved why not come along to Wroughton Workingmen's Club at 7:30pm on Tuesday 17th September, and then every following Tuesday. Toi, toi, toi! If you were one of the 153 people to have a ticket for our summer concerts at Ramsbury and Christ Church you may be interested to know that we were able to donate the sum of £1476.12 to the Prospect Hospice. We thank you all for supporting these concerts and this very worthy cause.
Nobody asked us to do a concert this year so with some trepidation we organised out own. Having managed our finances to make a profit on the Sorcerer we were able to donate the whole profit to the prospect Hospice. We weren’t sure there’d be any but we sold 153 tickets for the two concerts and with extra contributions from Caroline Pitt, Rosalie White, the bar providers at Ramsbury and numerous performers, cheaper rates for the venues a possible profit of nearly £1000 became £1476.12. These concerts take time and effort to get right, so once again, thanks to all involved! We are pleased to announce our next show will be THE SORCERER and you can see it at The Arts Centre, Old Town, Swindon from the 9th-13th April 2019.
Our Cast for the 2019 season are: Aline - Natalie Chequer Alexis - Rob Felstead Lady Sangazure - Karen Dacre Sir Marmaduke - Lance Trodd Dr. Daly - David Stephenson Mrs. Partlet - Jo Courage Constance - Claudia Philps Notary - Alan Fryer and John Wellington Wells - Stuart Benjamin |
