Iolanthe 2012: Have a go at a show!

Swindon Gilbert and Sullivan Society begin rehearsals at Wroughton Working Men’s Club for their next show 'Iolanthe' which will be staged at the Steam Museum in March 2012.

New members of all ages (16+) and sexes are needed to join the friendly cast, and opportunities for solo work will be on offer – audition dates will be advised. Helpers behind the scenes are also welcome.

If you enjoy singing and a bit of acting and dancing - and have a strong sense of the ridiculous, why not come and join the fun? It helps if you can read music, but isn’t essential.

‘Iolanthe’ is one of the Victorian duo’s most popular and best-loved comedy operas. Although first produced in 1882, it has a theme which will strike a chord with many today, as in it the House of Lords is lampooned as a bastion of the ineffective, privileged and dim-witted!

The political party system and other institutions also come in for a dose of satire. Yet, both author and composer manage to couch the criticism among such bouncy, amiable absurdities that it is all received as good fun.

As in all Gilbert and Sullivan's comedy operas, the main characters are all either in love, wanting to be in love, or in love with the wrong person.

When you learn that most of the male characters are members of the House of Lords, and the female characters are fairies, you'll get a sense of the extreme wackiness of the plot!

Rehearsals will be taking place in the Working Men’s Club in Wroughton on Tuesdays, starting on September 6 from 7.30 pm till about or just before 10pm. There is an annual subscription, but prospective new members are welcome to come along for two or three weeks before making a decision to join.
